COPA: Center of Public Art

The Center of Public Art is an intervention project designed to address a problem or opportunity in the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco. I chose to target the iconic gantry cranes used to hoist cargo to and from docked ships. These pillars of the old industrial Dogpatch have come to represent the character of the neighborhood in many ways. I wanted to preserve the legacy of these structures while providing usage to the general public. The resulting project involves fabricating a public art space to the skeletons of the cranes in order to provide artist residencies, a community work space, and public galleries open to the public with the intention of creating a participatory community arts district.
