Fireflow: a flow arts gathering

Fireflow is a proposed flow arts gathering which takes place in the Anza Borrego Desert in Southern California. I was tasked with designing a whole festival organized around an activity, person, place, or thing I enjoy. I immediately thought of poi spinning and flow arts in general. This newly adapted art form involves an array of performance-based activities, such as fire dart, poi, staff, and even hooping (hula hoop). The term "flow arts" is based on the psychological state of flow, where one becomes fully immersed in an activity and peak performance or concentration can be achieved–a concept explored by psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi.

My festival, Fireflow, would be a weekend-long gathering with skill share workshops, lectures, two stages of music, camping, and other educational workshops. I designed the identity of the festival to emphasize the psychedelic and spiritual nature of flow activities in a way that is welcoming to all participants, from those who are highly skilled to those whom have never heard of flow arts.
